Ruffle Jonkonnu (2022)

  • “I came across some beautiful watercolours by Isaac Mendes Belisario on the internet of Carnival characters and was struck that they looked like West African Masquerades. I made some sculptures of Nigerian masquerades, men dressing as spirits early on in my career.

    Now, John Canoe is a character that came about because slaves were given the chance to celebrate for a day. This may have been the beginning of Carnival which is now recognised all over the world.

    The Notting hill carnival Nourished London, especially the international communities in the city. I am hoping that display of Carnival characters will lift spirits; the format, dressing up as a character, is very contemporary, Batman Spiderman…. making an African character with Western clothing.

    My small maquette focus on men dressed up and this explores gender fluidity. African men dressed up in sailors’ clothes with dramatic headdresses, the hat inspired by admiral’s hats also look like colonial houses or houseboats.

    I was attracted to the image of a colonial house with shutters and trimmed bushes. This reminded me of the plantations where some of the slaves would have worked. Sugarcane plantations, tea plantations.

    The luxury of drinking tea is practiced and has been adopted as part of English culture, Lipton’s tea, Yorkshire tea, Tetley PG tips. If you are shocked and need calming, you are given tea… which is nourishing. Tying these historical connections to contemporary life is an element of my practice.

Manmade (2020)

  • Invitation to work in Ichihara, Chiba prefecture, Japan to create a sculpture for Ichihara Art Mix . The theme of this exhibition is ‘Journeys’ . I decided to make a sculpture for a wagon at Goi Station.

    The title of the project is  ‘Manmade’ . I thought of this title because the sculpture is  made by a woman, the conversation is also about the products made from our environment – oil, asphalt, metal, the carriages/ vehicles we build, cars, things for our journey.

  • Oil barrels are visible everywhere, in car repair shops all over the world – also used for barbecues and musical steel drums. I first used barrels in a sculpture for the environmental activist and writer Ken Saro Wiwa. The memorial sculpture was a bus, I put the names of the eight activists that died with him in 1995 on oil barrels on the top rack of the Battle Bus.

    The discovery and extraction of oil has changed the landscape of my home town in the Niger Delta Nigeria.We are unable to live where we were born; when I see oil barrels it reminds me of this product from the delta. Also with time and research I have realised that derivatives of oil is in all the products that we use daily in modern life – plastics used for computers, phones, containers, toilet seats, lipsticks holders, even lipstick itself … the list is endless.

    An oil barrel starts this conversation.

    My people live on 22 islands in the Niger Delta, we are Kalabari. Through bad governance, oil is taken out without care for the people living in the delta or the environment. Gas is flared (set on fire and burnt off into the air) which causes not only pollution in that particular area but it is said that it also breaks up the o-zone layer in Australia. The contrast of this situation, is the genius of mankind. Scientists make plastic bags from petroleum, this is an act of wonder. I am fascinated by mechanics and science. I also know that with commercial encouragement a way might be found to make this ‘substance’ less polluting for the planet. This is my dream, that priorities will change. I have faith.

    A recent group of Sokari’s distinctive metal figures: dancing, fighting, walking, living, all commenting on our dependence on oil and our relationship with the natural world. They are distinctly African, set in a world of recycled oil barrels, tin cans, colourful toy cars and pom pom-like  agapanthus. In spite of the apparent playfulness of some of Sokari’s pieces they carry a serious and hard-hitting message, tempered by her trust in human kind.
